What happens when you convert PNG to JPG
PNG is a lossless format with full alpha transparency — ideal for screenshots, logos, and artwork with sharp edges, at the cost of larger files for photos. JPG is the universal photo format: lossy compression, no transparency, and support in essentially every piece of software ever written.
- Photographic PNGs usually shrink a lot here — JPG's lossy compression is built for continuous tone, where PNG is not.
- JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are flattened onto a white background instead of turning black.
- Choose a quality between 40 and 100 to trade detail against file size — 85 is a good default.
- EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates, is dropped. Orientation is applied first, so the image stays the right way up.
- The file is converted in memory and streamed straight back — nothing is written to disk or saved to an account.

Which quality setting should I use for JPG?+
Quality 85 is a sensible default for JPEG. Push to 90–100 when the image will be edited or printed, and drop toward 60 when you need the smallest file and a little softness is acceptable.
What happens to transparency in my PNG?+
JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent regions are composited onto a white background before encoding. If you need to keep the alpha channel, convert to WebP, PNG, or AVIF instead.
Can I convert JPG back to PNG?+
Yes — the JPG to PNG converter handles the reverse direction. Bear in mind that a round trip through a lossy format does not restore the original data.
