What happens when you convert JPG to AVIF
JPG is the universal photo format: lossy compression, no transparency, and support in essentially every piece of software ever written. AVIF uses AV1 video compression for still images, usually producing the smallest file of any format here at a given quality. Support is good in modern browsers but thin in older desktop software.

- Choose a quality between 40 and 100 to trade detail against file size — 85 is a good default.
- EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates, is dropped. Orientation is applied first, so the image stays the right way up.
