What happens when you convert AVIF to WebP
AVIF uses AV1 video compression for still images, usually producing the smallest file of any format here at a given quality. Support is good in modern browsers but thin in older desktop software. WebP is Google's modern web format — smaller than JPG or PNG at comparable quality, with support for both transparency and animation.
- Transparent pixels stay transparent — the alpha channel is carried across.
- Choose a quality between 40 and 100 to trade detail against file size — 85 is a good default.
- EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates, is dropped. Orientation is applied first, so the image stays the right way up.
- The file is converted in memory and streamed straight back — nothing is written to disk or saved to an account.
Frequently asked questions
Is converting AVIF to WebP free?+
Yes — free, no watermark, and no account required. Signing in raises the per-file size limit and is the only reason you would need one.
Do you store the images I convert?+
No. Conversion happens in memory during the request and the result is streamed back to your browser. The file never touches our disks or database, and there is nothing to delete afterwards.
Which quality setting should I use for WebP?+
Quality 85 is a sensible default for WebP. Push to 90–100 when the image will be edited or printed, and drop toward 60 when you need the smallest file and a little softness is acceptable.
Is there a limit on file size?+
Guests get a smaller per-file limit than signed-in accounts. If a file is rejected as too large, signing in is usually enough to get it through.
Can I convert WebP back to AVIF?+
Yes — the WebP to AVIF converter handles the reverse direction.
