What happens when you convert GIF to JPG
GIF is the legacy animation format: a 256-colour palette and 1-bit transparency, but it plays anywhere, including places that still refuse video. JPG is the universal photo format: lossy compression, no transparency, and support in essentially every piece of software ever written.
- JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are flattened onto a white background instead of turning black.
- JPG is a still-image format, so an animated source is reduced to its first frame.
- Choose a quality between 40 and 100 to trade detail against file size — 85 is a good default.
- EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates, is dropped. Orientation is applied first, so the image stays the right way up.
- The file is converted in memory and streamed straight back — nothing is written to disk or saved to an account.

What happens to transparency in my GIF?+
JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent regions are composited onto a white background before encoding. If you need to keep the alpha channel, convert to WebP, PNG, or AVIF instead.
Can I convert JPG back to GIF?+
